All Hallows’ Eve is a traditional celebration of the Saints who we honor the next day, All Saints’ Day or All Hallows’ Day. Throughout the centuries of the Church there have been many ways of celebrating the saints – processions, feasts, musical productions, etc. Almost always people have dressed as their favorite saints.
It is an interesting phenomenon that has developed in the United States to dress as scary characters – even witches, which is contrary to All Saints’ Day. There are plenty of ‘scary’ saints who died in gruesome ways – if scary is what one is looking for. There are plenty of saints who were beautiful, heroic, small, big, book-smart, not-so-book-smart, musical, theatrical, athletic, etc. The sky is the limit.
Is there any harm in dressing as a football player or princess? No harm at all. There have been holy people involved in every good human activity! And, this gets at the heart of All Saints’ Day! All Saints’ Day is the celebration of all the human persons who are in heaven – saints – who have not been officially canonized by the Catholic Church: those who loved God and their neighbor. They would include mothers and fathers who have lovingly raised their children; the many who have taken care of the sick and dying; holy teachers; honest business owners; diligent builders; virtuous athletes; those who have laid down their lives for others; those persecuted and killed for their Catholic Faith; and many more.
TRUNK OR TREAT is an opportunity to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween) at our parish. Each family decorates the back of their car with a saint’s theme – or Church theme. Just think of it as the front of your house – just a little smaller space. The children go from trunk to trunk for various treats. It all takes place at the parish. As one who grew up ‘Trick or Treating’, Trunk or Treat definitely has a different vibe. It is just another option for families.

Vigilia de todas las almas (All Hallows’ Eve, en inglés) es una celebración tradicional de los santos a quienes honramos al día siguiente, en el día de Todos los Santos. A través de los siglos de la Iglesia, han habido muchas formas de celebrar a los santos – procesiones, fiestas, producciones musicales, etc. Casi siempre la gente se viste como su santo favorito.
Es un fenómeno interesante el que se ha desarrollado en los Estados Unidos de vestirse como caracteres de miedo – aún brujas, lo cual es contrario al Día de Todos los Santos. Hay muchos santos ‘escabrosos’ que murieron de forma espantosa – por si lo que están buscando es algo espantoso. Hay muchos santos que fueron bellos, heroicos, pequeños, grandes, inteligentes, no tan inteligentes, musicales, teatrales, atletas, etc. El cielo es el límite.
¿Se hace algún daño al vestirse de jugador de futbol, o de princesa? Ningún daño. ¡Ha habido gente santa involucrada en cada actividad humana! ¡Y, esto está al centro del Día de Todos los Santos! El Día de Todos los Santos es la celebración de toda persona humana que está en el Cielo – santos – que no han sido canonizados oficialmente por la Iglesia Católica: aquellos que amaban a Dios y a su prójimo. Estos incluirían, padres de familia que han criado amorosamente a sus hijos; a los muchos que han cuidado de los enfermos y a los moribundos; maestros santos; dueños de negocios honestos; trabajadores de construcción diligentes; atletas virtuosos; aquellos que han dado su vida por otros; los que han sido perseguidos y asesinados por su Fé Católica; y muchos más.
TRUNK OR TREAT es una oportunidad para celebrar la Vigilia de Todos los Santos (All Hallows’ Eve o Halloween) en nuestra parroquia. Cada familia decora la parte el baúl de su carro con el tema de un santo – o un tema de la Iglesia. Piensen como si fuera el frente de su casa – sólo que con un espacio más reducido. Los niños van de baúl en baúl para que les den dulces. Todo toma lugar en la parroquia. Como uno creció pidiendo ‘dulces o trucos’, Trunk or Treat definitivamente tiene una vibra diferente. Solo es otra opción para las familias.
