As the summer winds down and many of HT young adults will begin their post-high school studies, may you use your God-given gifts to gain knowledge. May your studies bring you to the Truth Who is the Source of all true education. What is Truth? asks Pontius Pilate. Truth stood in front of him! Truth is that which is in accord with reality. Gauge what you study according to Him Who says, I am the Way, and the Truth and the Life. May your knowledge of truth lead you to a greater love of Truth Himself, Jesus Christ.
We continue with our discussion of the Mass. In recent decades it would seem there has been plenty of confusion as to what the Mass is. For those of us who remember back to the 1970s – though we may not want to remember – there have been many liberties taken with the Mass. Some priests have thought themselves to be the center of attention (a danger with the priest facing the people). They, mistakenly, have tried to make the Mass exciting, engaging and entertaining. But, the Mass is the Perfect Prayer of the God-man (Jesus) to God the Father. What more can be added to It?!
When did this ‘Perfect Prayer’ of the God-man take place in history? It began at the Last Supper when Our Lord used sacrificial language to give us Himself in the Holy Eucharist – Take this, all of you and eat of it. For, this is My Body which will be given up for you. . .Take this, all of you and drink from it. For, this is the chalice of My Blood. . . It will be shed for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. It was completed on the Cross as Our Lord says, ‘It is finished.’
A sacrifice in the Old Testament is that which is offered to God by a priest in behalf of the people. Sacrifice means to make holy. The sacrifices of the Old Testament were often animals and/or bread and wine. But, these were sacrifices made by man which cannot make man holy. It is very different when the God-man offers Himself as the Sacrificial Lamb to God the Father in our behalf. Jesus’ Offering makes us holy!
And, how do we, 2000 years after Christ, have access to His Perfect Prayer, the Sacrifice of the God-man made to God the Father? It is the Sacrifice that is offered by every Catholic priest. We call It simply: The Mass. When Jesus tells the
Apostles at the Last Supper, ‘Do this in memory of Me,’ He makes them priests and bishops. He gives them authority and power to offer His Sacrifice.
Is it the same Sacrifice of Jesus 2000 years later? Does He suffer at every Mass?

Mientras que el verano se desvanece y muchos de los jóvenes de HT comienzan sus estudios de educación superior, ojalá que usen sus dones dados por Dios para ganar conocimiento. Que sus estudios los lleven a la Verdad, quien es la Fuente de toda educación verdadera. ¿Qué es la Verdad? Pregunta Poncio Pilato. ¡La Verdad estaba de pie frente a él! Verdad es aquello que está de acuerdo con la realidad. Que la medida de sus estudios esté de acuerdo con Él, quien dice, Yo soy el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida. Que su conocimiento de la verdad los guie hacia un mayor amor de la Verdad Misma, Jesucristo.
Vamos a continuar con nuestra discusión acerca de la Misa. En décadas recientes pareciera que ha habido bastante confusión en cuanto a lo que es la Misa. Para nosotros los que recordamos los años 1970’s – aunque a lo mejor no lo queremos recordar – ha habido muchas libertades que se han tomado con la Misa. Algunos sacerdotes piensan que ellos son el centro de atención (un peligro con los sacerdotes de frente con los feligreses). Erróneamente ellos han tratado de hacer la Misa fascinante y cautivadora. Pero, la Misa es la Oración Perfecta que el Dios-hombre (Jesús) ofrece a Dios Padre. ¡¿Que más se le puede añadir?
¿Cuándo tuvo lugar en la historia esta ‘Oración Perfecta’? Comenzó en la Última Cena cuando Nuestro Señor uso un lenguaje expiatorio para entregarse a Sí Mismo en la Sagrada Eucaristía – Tomen este, todos ustedes y coman de él. Porque este es Mi Cuerpo que será entregado por ustedes … Tomen este, todos ustedes y beban. Porque este es el cáliz de Mi Sangre … que será derramada por muchos, para el perdón de los pecados. Fue completado en la Cruz cuando Nuestro Señor dice, ‘ha terminado’.
Un sacrificio en el Antiguo Testamento es aquel que era ofrecido a Dios por un sacerdote en nombre del pueblo. Sacrificio significa hacer algo santo. Los sacrificios del Antiguo Testamento eran a menudo de animales y/o pan y vino. Pero, estos eran sacrificios hechos por el hombre los cuales no puede hacer santo al hombre. Es muy diferente cuando el Dios-hombre se ofrece a Sí mismo como el Cordero Expiatorio a Dios Padre en nombre nuestro. ¡El ofrecimiento de Jesús nos hace santos!
Y, ¿cómo nosotros, después de 2000 años después de Cristo, tenemos acceso a su Oración Perfecta, el Sacrificio del Dios-hombre hecho a Dios Padre? Es el Sacrificio que cada sacerdote católico ofrece. Nosotros lo llamamos simplemente: La Misa. Cuando Jesús le dice a los Apóstoles en la Última Cena, ‘Hagan esto en conmemoración Mia’ Él los hace sacerdotes y obispos. Él les da autoridad y poder para ofrecer Su Sacrificio.
¿Es el mismo Sacrificio de Jesús 2000 años después? ¿Él sufre en cada Misa?
