Thank you to Mr. Andy Bowie for his many years of dedication at Holy Trinity. Andy will retire on March 25th. Whether mowing in 90+ degree temperature or removing snow in 15 degree weather or fixing something in the church or just doing one of the many tasks behind the scenes to take care of the building, Andy was here.
Thank you to everyone who was able to carve out some time to attend our parish mission given by Monsignor Charles Mangan. Fr. Mangan, who was a few years ahead of me at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, is a humble priest with a wealth of knowledge and experience. He studied in Rome and worked in the Vatican for many years before returning to his diocese of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He now teaches our seminarians at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary!
Does it happen to you as you get older that you start to remember certain dates and events? Perhaps, there are just more experiences of life as we get older? Well, one date that hit me tonight as I was reminiscing with Monsignor Mangan was March 9, 2018. It was a Friday. It was the day Fr. Eddy Tewes left our parish because of his failing health. Some of you may recall Fr. Tewes who was here from 2015-2018. Our Lord took him home August 17, 2019. His funeral Mass here was attended by two bishops, about seventy priests, about seventy altar boys and many hundreds of laity. Permit to remember him – especially for our newer parishioners.
Fr. Tewes came to the priesthood – ordained in 1996 – after work as a chemist and high school teacher. He struggled with many physical ailments throughout his life. He was a faithful, joyful priest who shouldered his crosses admirably. He was a humble priest who could laugh at himself and help others laugh. He was human. Perhaps, a few memories.
· His many creative gifts. I still offer Mass with a chasuble he gave me.
· His self-deprecating sense of humor. I remember more than once in conversation saying something was a waste. He responded – more than once – not to talk about his “waist” that way! He’d just start chuckling.
· Again, in a homily he once remarked that he was supposed to have been seven feet tall since he had the perfect weight for a seven-footer!
· His joy in just sitting down to chat. (Sometimes, I would have to yell down the hallway in the office to ask if there was anything getting done! He’d just have a witty remark.)
· His hidden abilities. Did you know he understood Spanish no problem? His mother was Puerto Rican. A couple of women in the office never knew until one day he corrected their Spanish grammar.
· His care for the sick. How many times did he visit the sick without saying much to anyone!
· And, last but not least, the KEYS!
May we remember Fr. Tewes in our prayers who was Our Lord’s instrument of grace and mercy at Holy Trinity.

Gracias a Andy Bowie por sus muchos años de dedicación a Holy Trinity. Andy se va a retirar el 25 de marzo. Así sea cortando el pasto con temperaturas de 90+ grados o removiendo nieve en temperaturas de 15 grados, o arreglando algo en la iglesia o únicamente haciendo una de las muchas tareas detrás del escenario en el edificio, Andy estaba allí.
Gracias a todos los que pudieron sacar un tiempo para asistir a nuestra Misión Parroquial con Monseñor Charles Mangan, quien estuvo en el Seminario Mount St. Mary’s unos años antes que yo. El Padre Mangan es un sacerdote modesto, con mucho conocimiento y experiencia. Él estudió en Roma y trabajó en el Vaticano durante muchos años antes de regresar a su diócesis en Siux Falls, Dakota del Sur. Ahora él da clases a nuestros seminaristas en el Seminario Mount St. Mary!
¿No les pasa que mientras están ganando años comienzan a recordar ciertas fechas y eventos? Tal vez, ¿sólo son más experiencias de vida mientras envejecemos? Bien, una de las fechas que me vinieron a la mente hoy mientras recordaba con Monseñor Mangan fue el 9 de marzo del 2018. Fue un viernes, fue el día que el Padre Eddy Tewes dejó nuestra parroquia porque su salud se estaba deteriorando. Algunos de ustedes tal vez recuerdan al Padre Tewes que estuvo aquí desde el 2015 al 2018. Nuestro Señor se lo llevo a casa el 17 de agosto del 2019. Su Misa de Funeral fue aquí y a ella asistieron dos Obispos, cerca de setenta sacerdotes, alrededor de setenta monaguillos y muchos cientos de laicos. Permítanme recordarlo – especialmente por nuestros nuevos feligreses.
El Padre Tewes vino al sacerdocio – ordenado en 1996 – después de haber trabajado como Químico y como profesor de secundaria. El sufrió muchas dolencias durante su vida. Él fue un fiel y feliz sacerdote que llevó sus cruces admirablemente. Él fue un sacerdote modesto que se podía reír de sí mismo y ayudar a otros a reír. Él fue humano. A lo mejor algunas memorias:
· Sus muchos creativos regalos. Yo todavía ofrezco Misa con la casulla que él me regalo.
· Su autocrítico sentido del humor. Yo recuerdo decir en conversación que algo era un desperdicio. El respondía – más de una vez – ¡que no le hablara de esa forma! Y comenzaba a reírse.
· Una vez más, en una homilía, el remarcó que el debería medir siete pies ¡ya que tenía el peso perfecto para alguien así de alto!
· Su alegría en solo sentarse a platicar. (A veces, ¡yo tenía que preguntar desde mi oficina si se estaba haciendo algo! Él solo hacia un comentario ingenioso)
· Sus habilidades escondidas. ¿Sabían ustedes que entendía español? Su mamá era puertorriqueña. Un par de señoras en la oficina no lo sabían hasta que él les corrigió su gramática en español.
· Su cuidado por los enfermos. ¡Cuántas veces el visito a los enfermos sin decir nada a nadie!
· Y por último pero no menos importante, ¡las LLAVES!
Ojala que recordemos al Padre Tewes en nuestras oraciones, quien fue un instrumento de gracia y misericordia de Nuestro Señor en Holy Trinity.
